Some people over the years have asked me if I actually teach. Yes, in our homeschool I actually teach this stuff. Honestly, I don’t teach everything all the time. Some of my kids have taken online courses, or video courses from time to time, but yes, school happens here.
I think this is a funny question. I have never heard anyone ask a public school teacher if she really teaches in her classroom. I realize that even though homeschooling is becoming more and more prevalent, there are still people who have never known anyone who homeschooled, so it is something that is a novelty and they are probably not sure how it works.
I do appreciate the opportunity to teach others about homeschooling and assure them that most of us really do teach. We use all sorts of methods, curriculums, and philosophies. So, no two homeschools are ever alike. And quite honestly, no two years at my house have ever been the same.
Homeschooling in the end is about freedom and rights. I have the freedom to direct the education of my children in the way that I see fit and under the law, I have the right to do so. More importantly, the Bible supports this way of life in Deuteronomy 6:6-7 “And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”
You may not have a nice, big whiteboard at your house, but I bet teaching happens all the time at your house too.
